The events in The Architects Series, a video format bringing renowned Italian and international design studios to SpazioFMG per l’Architettura, continue.
The third event in the series opens at 18:30 on June 14 in the showroom at Via Bergognone 27, beginning with a screening about Archi-Tectonics of New York.
The opening will be attended by the studio’s founder Winka Dubbeldam, who will give a talk entitled “New Solids” after the screening.
In the wake of the success of the first two events in the series, SpazioFMG per l’Architettura, the Milanese gallery and showroom of the Iris Ceramica and FMG Fabbrica Marmi e Graniti brands, inaugurates the third chapter in The Architects Series: an exclusive video format presented by The Plan magazine, accompanying viewers on a voyage of discovery of the world’s outstanding architectural hubs.
At 18:30 on June 14, the Iris Ceramica Group’s Milanese gallery and showroom will open its doors to the innovative approach of famous New York studio Archi-Tectonics, founded by Dutch Architect Winka Dubbeldam in New York in 1994, with offices in New York, the Netherlands and in China.
Archi-Tectonics’s success is based on Innovative projects with a focus on sustainability; over the years the studio has worked on projects in different scales ranging from urban masterplans to buildings, to objects.
Since the nineties, Archi-Tectonics has explored 3D digital modelling techniques in a forward-looking spirit, as an early adopter of digital tools such as the computer, and 3D printing, though without ever completely abandoning hand drawing and a mediated approach to design. The successful duality of hand and mind is key to founder Winka Dubbeldam’s conceptual thinking; combining digital design with craftsmanship, intuition and ability alongside the advanced prototyping and modelling tools involved in the concept of “digital craft”. Working in close partnership with advanced manufacturers goes beyond the conventional boundaries of design, taking the renowned international studio into a dimension of continual discovery and innovation.
The Architect Series – A documentary on Archi-Tectonics takes viewers on a virtual tour exploring not only the studio itself but a very important theme for its founder, “New Solids”: a new interest in massive form, at once soft and luxurious, which comfort and ground people. The result is an architecture that approximates industrial design, the product of quality engineering, guided by constant research into new materials and methods of production and by a strong awareness of issues of environmental sustainability.
Archi-Tectonics’ focus is not on style or form, but what may be found in every project is an approach aimed at creating precise and optimized solutions and unique, innovative, energy-efficient designs. The studio doesn’t focus on style alone, or on creating an easily recognisable signature look, but develops a process associating creativity with technical innovation: a process taking the shape of poetic precision.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with Winka Dubbeldam discussing Archi-Tectonics’ modus operandi and design strategy, with a particular focus on the concept of “New Solids”.
