To mark the opening of Design Week, the Iris Ceramica Group celebrates avant-garde architecture and experimentation through the work of the Bjarke Ingels Group, founded in Copenhagen in 2005. The studio now employs a team of more than 500 people from all over the world, with offices in Copenhagen, London and New York.
Architecture, urban planning, landscape design, interior design, product design, engineering: these are the keywords describing the production of the multidisciplinary studio known by the acronym BIG, which has maintained a constant focus on the key values of architecture, viewed as both an art and a science concerned with our cities and buildings, adapting them to the broadest variety of contemporary lifestyles. The studio’s unconventional design philosophy is expressed in all elements and activities of everyday life: from living and leisure to work, shopping and transportation. Behind every BIG project is the concept of information driven design, attentive to cultural, climatic and economic parameters, which must always inform and influence the architect’s work.
With the support of the entire team, BIG has designed and constructed buildings that have won prestigious prizes including the Børsen Gazelle in 2013 and 2015, and the Nykredits Architecture Prize in 2018. A selection of their best-known projects include the LEGO House, a cultural centre for play and experimentation offering both adults and young people opportunities to stimulate their creativity and learning; the Tirpitz Museum, known as the “invisible museum”, transforms and expands a German bunker dating back to World War II in Varde, Denmark; and the Danish National Maritime Museum in Helsingør, Denmark, designed to reflect and reveal Denmark’s role as an ancient and contemporary maritime power.
The studio’s projects include not only museums but housing developments such as The Mountain, named best residential building at the World Architecture Fair in 2008, and projects designed to encourage social cohesion in public spaces, such as Superkilen, a colourful urban pathway through the Nørrebro district, Copenhagen’s most ethnically diverse neighborhood, and which collected proposals from local inhabitants to combine elements of everyday life from different cultures, from Morocco to Japan and Chile.
At the screening of “The Architects Series – A documentary on: BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group”, BIG partner Kai-Uwe Bergmann will accompany the audience behind the scenes in the firm’s New York offices in Brooklyn’s DUMBO district.
The screening will be followed at 7pm by the lecture “BIG + Small”, in which Kai-Uwe Bergmann describes the studio’s approach to design, operations and organisation.
Following the exclusive opening in the Brera District, the eighth episode in The Architects Series will remain open as usual in the SpazioFMG per l’Architettura showroom in Via Bergognone 27, Zona Tortona.
